Unmanned Shipping: The Future of Inland Navigation

In the Westhoek, small waterways provide perfect opportunities for semi-autonomous inland navigation. The adoption of autonomous vessels presents numerous future possibilities, including reduced operational costs and solutions to labor market challenges. This evolution creates substantial opportunities for the West Flanders region, particularly in strengthening the local economy and enhancing logistical infrastructure.

This project aims to improve semi-autonomous inland navigation through technology that enables remote control. Captains can operate vessels from a control center onshore, enhancing safety and efficiency. During the event, attendees will learn about the implications of 5G technology for unmanned shipping and witness the benefits of 360° cameras combined with Virtual Reality glasses, allowing captains to stream live images from the vessel.
